* Legislators, Environmental, Sportsmen Groups Oppose Budget Deal, Want Eco-Friendly Budget
Members of the House and representatives of 30 environmental and sportsmens' groups held a press conference this week opposing the budget deal agreed to a week ago which would lease up to 100,000 acres of State Forest land for natural gas drilling and significantly cut funding for environmental agencies to help raise between $60 and $100 million to balance the budget.

* Chesapeake Bay Foundation: The Budget Is Not Done
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation wrote to all members of the General Assembly and Gov. Rendell this week saying the state budget is not done because it has not addressed significant outstanding funding issues to meet state and federal clean water mandates, including the renewal of the Growing Greener Program which ends next year.

The Growing Greener Watershed Restoration Program will be ten years old in December and to help celebrate 10 groups have come together to invite watershed groups to share their success stories on a special Growing Greener website.

* PA CleanWays Sponsors Illegal Dump Cleanups In Northampton County
PA CleanWays and other local partners will hold an illegal dump cleanup on October 17 at Blue Mountain in Wind Gap, Northampton County on October 17 starting at 9:00 a.m.

* Workshop On Enhancing Waste Services, Improving Quality Of Life October 1 Blair County
The Professional Recyclers of Pennsylvania, with support from and in cooperation with the U.S.D.A., is offering a free workshop in Blair County on October 1 to provide rural municipalities with a better understanding of their solid waste management responsibilities and how they might address them.

Philadelphia University's innovative M.S. in Sustainable Design Program has received the 2009 Excellence in Green Building Education Recognition Award from the U.S. Green Building Council.

* Department Of General Services Earns National Award For Innovative Purchase of Energy
The Department of General Services has earned national honors for developing innovative and cost-saving strategies to purchase the energy that powers state government, receiving a George Cronin Silver Award from the National Association of State Procurement Officials, or NASPO.

* Pennsylvania Awards $1 Million Grant To Finance CO2 Capture
The Department of Environmental Protection Secretary this week announced a $1 million grant to help finance a project testing new technology designed to capture a minimum of 95 percent of the carbon dioxide (CO2), a major greenhouse gas, from a coal-fired test plant at CONSOL Energy’s Research and Development Division south of Pittsburgh.

* Susquehanna Water Gaps Are Recognized As A National Natural Landmark
An ancient river got a brand new plaque on September 9 when the “five gaps” area north of Harrisburg was recognized once again as a “national natural landmark.”

* DCNR Acquires 708-Acre Tract For Addition To Delaware State Forest
Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Acting Secretary John Quigley this week joined Pike County civic and regional conservation leaders in celebrating the acquisition of a 708-acre piece of land that expands the Delaware State Forest to more than 84,000 acres.
