Columbia Gas continues its partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful by supporting the local affiliate, Tri-County CleanWays, and their Lower East Side Community Garden in New Castle, Lawrence County..

On June 26, community volunteers and Columbia Gas employees volunteered their time, skills and equipment to help with stump removal, bush and tree trimming, building a compost area and building a rain garden.

The community gardens provides fresh vegetables, herbs and gardening education to those in need, free of charge. The garden contributes to the community's wellbeing by influencing a nutritional and social environment conducive to all.

The community garden does not accept monetary contributions, but welcomes volunteers and/or donations of materials.

“What a pleasure to work with the Lower East Side Community Garden, Lawrence County Conservation District, Columbia Gas DON Services, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, Kenny Rice, Mary Burris, the neighborhood residents, and everyone who supported this project!” said Jerry Zona, Executive Director of Tri-County CleanWays.

Tri-County CleanWays serves Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties. Their local programs include illegal dump cleanups, special collections, education and beautification.

Since 1993, Tri-County CleanWays has worked with local residents who want to clean and beautify their communities by coordinating illegal dump and litter cleanups, recycling events for hard-to-dispose items, beautification projects, and public education efforts.

“Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania is committed to environmental stewardship,” said Sarah Perry, Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania Community Engagement Manager. “We are humbled to support community organizations like Tri-County CleanWays that help to protect and conserve the environment.”

“Our affiliates, their partners, volunteers and local businesses are what make neighborhood programs successful. The Lower East Side Community Garden is a treasure to local residents and we are grateful for the time, resources and coordination between Tri-County CleanWays, the garden and Columbia Gas that contributed to the improvements made,” said Shannon Reiter, President of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.
