Bucks County Joins Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s Growing Grassroots Network

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful is pleased to announce the newest affiliate to the growing Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network, Keep Bucks County Beautiful.
Keep Bucks County Beautiful was developed with the support of the Bucks County Conservation District.  Gretchen Schatschneider will serve as the Affiliate Coordinator.
Ms. Schatschneider works for the Bucks County Conservation District as their District Manager.  Mary Ellen Noonan, Environmental Educator, and Meghan Rogalus, Watershed Specialist, will also be carrying out affiliate programming.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, a nonprofit organization based in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, has the mission of empowering Pennsylvanians to make our communities clean and beautiful.  Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful carries out their mission with the help of nineteen Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful affiliates and seven Keep America Beautiful local affiliates across the state.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, along with their affiliates, have engaged more than 1,300,000 volunteers and nearly 20,000 communities in keeping Pennsylvania beautiful. They have properly disposed of over 86 million pounds of littered trash from our communities and cleaned more than 106,000 miles of roadways, streams, trails, and greenways.
The organization’s three focus areas are Prevent It (litter and illegal dump prevention), Clean It (cleanup and community greening), and Keep It (proper waste handling and sustainable practices). By engaging volunteers, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful extends the reach of its educational efforts and multiplies the impact of its actions.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful believes education is the key to encourage positive behaviors toward community improvement and that improving communities, their environment, and quality of life all begins with personal responsibility.
In July, 2011, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful released its report on illegal dumps in Bucks County.  The survey of the county identified 123 illegal dumpsites containing an estimated 223 tons of trash.
Of the items inventoried at each dumpsite assessed, 76 percent of the sites contained tires, 71 percent contained yard waste, 67 percent had construction and demolition waste, 66 percent had recyclables, and 54 percent of the sites had household trash.
Illegal dumpsites pose many threats to the health and safety of humans and wildlife, including giving mosquitoes a place to breed.  West Nile Virus, carried by mosquitoes, has been a primary concern for environmental officials.
An initial goal of Keep Bucks County Beautiful will be to work with volunteer groups, municipalities, and community partners to get these sites cleaned and have them remain clean.  The affiliate will also be promoting and distributing Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful educational materials in Bucks County schools and other outreach opportunities in addition to other Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful programming.
Individuals and groups interested in volunteering can contact Keep Bucks County Beautiful at 215-345-7577.  If you would like to learn more, visit the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and Keep Bucks County Beautiful websites.
